OUR COUNTRY GIVETH AND TAKETH AWAY

“Friend, you cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.  What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.  The government can’t give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody.  When half of the people get the idea they don’t have to work because the other half’s going to take care of them and the other half get the idea it does no good to work because somebody’s going to get what they work for.... that, dear friend, is about the end of any nation.”  - Dr. Adrian Rogers

I thought this was a quote worth repeating.  I often struggle with the inverted mindset our country has when it comes to charity.  I am a giver on many levels so it’s not about the giving itself but it’s more about the freedom of being able to give at my own discretion with the monies I have worked hard to earn.  We continue to raise up a generation of lazy people that are accustomed to living off the government and abusing the flawed systems we have in place.  Those that work hard get frustrated and lose the benefit of making it to the next level and thus creating a country that will fall behind in production, innovation and growth.  Others will continue to live off of the government until they sap it dry and are forced to do something else.  If the system allows it, what motivation is there to make a better life for yourself, become financially independent and make wise choices that compliment your current position in life?

It’s not in my budget to get most of the things that are WIC approved but yet I see people with carts full of stuff they are essentially getting for free (and pay for the cigarettes and alcohol separate), driving a nicer car, watching a nicer TV (with full cable), living in a nicer house, have more cash flow....etc.  There are a few select people (about 2-5% of current) that might truly qualify to be on government assistance of any type but even they should be cared for by their family, church and/or community around them.  People that know the recipients have an opportunity to bless them, hold them accountable and help them to realistically get on their feet.  People in the communities will be more likely to hold each other accountable when assessing the situation and validity of a truly needy person.  People shouldn’t be blessed because they made poor decisions such as continuing to have kids when they can’t afford them, choosing to ignore public education opportunities and rejecting jobs because it’s below you.  I see help wanted signs all over the place but why should people take a lower paying and humbling job when the government is willing to give them even more...with no cost?

Recently someone who won the lottery, had a few houses and a few hundred thousand in cash was caught using food stamps because the gov’t continued giving them to her.  She had no problem using them since it was like free money and she used the excuse that she didn’t have a job to validate the continued use of the program.  This is just a sample of the deceitfulness that people have in their hearts that is encouraged by our country.  We the people must rise up and defend our country and the values it was founded on if we want to restore our future and leave a great legacy for future generations.
