BOW DOWN
What is the significance of bowing down? We see people bow down to the Queen at the Olympics, we see it on television/movies, we read about it in history books, we observe it in other cultures and we even see Biblical examples of it. I’m certain that each culture has their own spin on methodology and etiquette rules but it universally seems to be a sign of respect and honor.
Sometimes it may be a simple nod or bowing gesture. Sometimes it requires falling to your knees in a simple bow or even repetitive bowing motions while assuming the humbled posture. I even picture the guys from Wayne’s World bowing down and saying, “We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy”. It’s meant to be a joke but the intention is they are giving someone respect for doing something awesome and significantly above status quo.
Scripture says, “you shall have no other Gods before Me”. Shadrach (Hananiah), Meshach (Mishael) and Abednego (Azariah) were commanded by Nebuchadnezzar to fall down (bow down) and worship the King but they refused to do that since they were servants of Jesus Christ. In this instance, Nebuchadnezzar was expecting them to worship images of gold and things that were beyond the scope of general courtesy for authority. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were rewarded by God and saved from the fiery furnace (literally) because of their dedication.
I don’t always understand the practices and expectations other cultures and religions put on their followers but I do understand why I’m willing to “bow down” to Jesus Christ (the Lord of my life). When I put my hands in the air and/or bow down during worship, it is a sign of surrender and ultimate respect for my Creator. It has meaning and it’s not just going through the motions because someone expects me to. There was a time in my life when I would stand with a posture of toughness (arms crossed) because I was going through the motions of Christianity but wasn’t ready to completely surrender my life to Christ. Once that change occurred in my life, it’s as if a million chains were cut off of me and I was free to live according to God’s will and purposes for my life. Don’t be afraid to bow down… if it’s for the right reasons!
